Marian Anderson (1897 – 1993)

Marian Anderson was an American opera singer who was an important figure in the struggle for African-American artists to overcome racial prejudice in the United States during the mid-twentieth century.  Anderson was the first African-American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. When refused private performing space in Washington, D.C., she instead performed before thousands in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
