Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor (1878 – 1932)
A professional cyclist, at a time when cycling was more popular than both football and baseball. Taylor won the sprint event at the 1899 world track championships to become the first African- American to achieve the rank of cycling world champion. He challenged racial prejudice both on and off the track, and was a pioneering role model for other athletes facing discrimination.
